Endoscopy

Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope, an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Unlike most other medical imaging devices, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. Endoscope can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line of-sight observation is not feasible.

Doctors will often recommend endoscopy to evaluate:
  • Stomach pain
  • Ulcers,gastritis , or difficulty swallowing
  • Digestive tract bleeding
  • Changes in bowel habits (chronic constipation or diarrhea)
  • polyps or growths in the colon
In addition, your doctor may use an endoscope to take a biopsy (removal of tissue) to look for the presence of disease.
Endoscopy may also be used to treat a digestive tract problem. For example, the endoscope might not only detect active bleeding from an ulcer, but devices can be passed through the endoscope that can stop the bleeding. In the colon, polyps can be removed through the scope to prevent the development of colon cancer.
Also, using ERCP, gallstones that have passed outside the gallbladder and into the bile duct can be removed.

Overall, endoscopy is very safe; however, the procedure does have a few potential complications, which may include
  • Perforation (tear in the gut wall)
  • Reaction to sedation
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pancreatitis as a result of ERCP

How to deal with Choking

Scenario:You're friends and you are eating pizza at a your birthday party.Suddenly one of your friends start gagging(not from the terrible taste) and looks as if they have trouble breathing. What do you do?

Well you shouldn't punch their stomach like in action movies and don't go patting their backs like you're trying to get a baby to burp.No this is what you do

One thing for sure:CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!!!!
1.Get them to stand
2.Bend their upper body forward and smack their backs(not too hard) 5 times
3.Next put your leg between theirs and cover your dominant fist with your other hand
4.Press underneath their diaphragm and then pull your fist up
5.Keep on doing this until the food pops out

Why do you do this?
Think of as a cork on a champagne bottle. If you put pressure on the bottle there is a likely chance the cork with pop out from where it was stuck.Same thing as choking, when your putting pressure on diaphragm the lungs build up pressure, and to release the pressure they blast it up the windpipe and out comes the lodged food piece.

What is choking?
When either an animal or human have severe difficulty in breathing because of a constricted or obstructed throat or a lack of air.
